### Custard Apple Farming Part 2: Global Level Advanced Techniques to Earn Up to $32,000 Per Acre
Hello farmers, in Part 1 you learned the basics of Custard Apple farming - best varieties, soil, climate, and pit preparation. If you haven't read Part 1, please read it first.
In Part 2, we will talk about Global Level Farming. The same Custard Apple which sells for $1 to $1.80 per kg in the Indian local market, sells for $10 to $15 per kg in Dubai, London, and the USA. In this guide, you will learn the Israel and Taiwan advanced technology to get 3x more yield and export your fruit directly.
#### 1. Why is There So Much Global Demand for Custard Apple?
India is the No.1 producer of Custard Apple in the world, but we are far behind in export. The only reason is our old traditional method.
In the global market, Custard Apple is known as Custard Apple, Sugar Apple, and Sweetsop and it is considered a Superfood. According to WHO, it is rich in Vitamin-C, Magnesium, Potassium, Fiber, and Antioxidants. It is also a great immunity booster.
The price of Custard Apple in India during the season is Rs. 80-150 per kg [$1 - $1.80], while the same fruit in Dubai sells for Rs. 800-1200 per kg [$9.5 - $14.5] and in London it sells for $15 to $18 per kg. The global custard apple market is growing at 7.5% every year.
Farmers in Taiwan and Israel are producing 25 to 30 tons per hectare using new technology, while the average production in India is only 8 to 10 tons per hectare. If you adopt the global technique, you can double your profit from the same land.
#### 2. Selection of Varieties for Global Market - Most Important Step
Balanagar variety is good for the local market, but for export you need a variety which has a longer shelf life, fewer seeds, bigger size, and sweeter pulp.
**A. Arka Sahan - The Export King of India**
This variety is developed by IIHR, Bangalore. It has more than 50% pulp, very few seeds, and it does not turn black for 7 to 8 days after harvesting. While the local Desi variety turns black in just 2 days. This is the best variety for export because it can survive long-distance transport. Its TSS is 28-30 Brix, which is much sweeter.
**B. Atemoya Hybrid - The Most Expensive Variety**
This is a hybrid of Custard Apple and Cherimoya. It is most popular in Taiwan and Israel. The fruit weight goes from 500 grams to 1 kg and its sweetness is double than the Desi variety. It has very few seeds and creamy pulp. Its export price is the highest in the world. In the USA, Atemoya sells for more than $20 per kg.
**C. Red Sitaphal / African Pride**
This variety is red from outside and white from inside. It looks very attractive, so 5-star hotels and foreign supermarkets buy it immediately. It also performs very well in hot climates and is highly suitable for high-density planting.
**Expert Tip:** For 1 acre, plant 70% Arka Sahan and 30% Atemoya. This will give you excellent cross-pollination and you will get the benefit of both markets - local and export.
#### 3. High-Density Plantation - Grow 3 Times More Plants in Less Land
In India, farmers plant at a distance of 5x5 meters, so only 160 plants can be planted in 1 acre.
In global technology, plants are planted at 3x2 meters or 4x2 meters. With this method, 500 to 600 plants can be planted in 1 acre.
You will think, won't plants get spoiled if they are so close? Absolutely not. In this technique, pruning and canopy management is done every year, so the plant remains like a small bush, it does not grow too tall. This makes sunlight fall on every leaf, harvesting becomes very easy, and production increases by 3 times. Drip irrigation is compulsory in high-density farming.
This is the same technique that Israel uses for all its fruit crops and that is why they get the highest yield in the world from small land.
#### 4. Hand Pollination - How to Increase Fruit Setting from 10% to 90%
The biggest problem in Custard Apple is less fruit setting. The reason is that the male and female parts of the flower mature at different times, so natural pollination is only 5-10% successful.
Every farmer in Taiwan does hand pollination and gets 80-90% fruit setting. The method is very simple.
**Step 1: Collect Pollen:** Between 6 AM to 8 AM in the morning, collect the yellow pollen from fully opened flowers with the help of a small soft brush or pencil. Store this pollen in a small glass bottle.
**Step 2: Do the Pollination:** Between 4 PM to 6 PM in the evening, apply this pollen with the brush to the flowers which are half-opened. These are in the female stage and will receive the pollen perfectly.
**Benefit:** With just this one technique, your fruit size will increase by 30%, the fruit will not be deformed, and the yield will directly double. For 500 plants, 2 labours can complete the work in just 3-4 days. This one step can increase your income by lakhs.
#### 5. Pruning and Hormone Management - Take Two Crops in One Year
In the traditional method, Custard Apple gives fruit only once in August-September. With the global technique, you can take fruit twice a year.
For this, pruning is done in June and December. All the old branches of the plant are cut by up to 50%. After 15 days, spray 2% Urea + Plano-fix hormone. This will bring heavy flowering on the new branches.
In Israel, this same technique is used to grow off-season fruits and get 4 times the price. Off-season Custard Apple sells for Rs. 300-400 per kg [$3.6 - $4.8] while in-season it is only Rs. 100.
Do not forget to apply Bordeaux paste on the cut ends to avoid fungal infection.
#### 6. Global Technique for Water and Fertilizer - Drip + Fertigation
Custard Apple does not need flood water at all, its roots will rot. Give only 20-25 liters of water per plant daily through drip. Install 2 drippers near every plant.
Give fertilizer with water, which is called Fertigation. Give NPK 19:19:19 and Micronutrients like Boron and Zinc with drip water. When the fruit is developing, definitely spray Potash and Boron. This will prevent the fruit from cracking and will increase the sweetness by 25%.
In global farms, soil testing is done every 6 months and fertilizer is given only as per the need. This saves fertilizer cost and increases quality.
#### 7. Harvesting, Grading and Packaging - The Life of Export
Local farmers harvest the fruit after it is fully ripe, then it turns black in 2 days and cannot be transported.
The global standard is to harvest the fruit when it is 75% ripe, when its eyes become wide and open and light yellowish colour appears between the segments. At this stage, the fruit is mature but hard.
After harvesting, make 3 grades - A Grade - above 300 grams, B Grade - 200-300 grams, C Grade - small size. Only A Grade is exported.
Within 2 hours of harvesting, the fruit must be cooled at 8 degrees, this is called Pre-Cooling. This keeps the fruit fresh for 12 to 15 days. For sending abroad, every fruit is packed wearing a foam net in a 2 kg or 4 kg corrugated box so that it does not get pressed and damaged.
Use ethylene ripening chambers at the destination to ripen the fruit perfectly before selling.
#### 8. Value Addition - 10 Times More Money in Pulp
If you sell only fresh fruit, you will get Rs. 100 per kg [$1.20], but if you sell pulp, you will get Rs. 400-500 per kg [$4.8 - $6].
Ice cream companies like Amul, Vadilal, Mother Dairy buy Custard Apple pulp throughout the year. With a small pulp making machine of Rs. 1.5 lakh [$1800], you can extract the pulp, store it at -18 degrees, and sell it for the whole year.
Apart from pulp, Custard Apple powder, shake, ice cream, rabdi, and wine are also sold at a very high price. The demand for pulp in the Middle East and Europe is very high because they cannot store fresh fruit for long. Value addition is the real secret of global farmers.
#### 9. Cost and Profit Calculation for 1 Acre High-Density Farming
Let's calculate the cost for 550 plants in 1 acre.
First Year Cost: Plants 550 x Rs. 150 = Rs. 82,500 [$990]
Drip System + Pit Preparation = Rs. 70,000 [$840]
Fertilizer, Medicine, Labour yearly = Rs. 50,000 to 60,000 [$600 - $720]
**Total First Year Investment = Approx Rs. 2,00,000 [$2400]**
Production from 3rd Year: Even if we take 20 kg per plant, then 550 plants x 20 kg = 11,000 kg i.e. 11 Tons.
Income from Local Market @ Rs. 100/kg = Rs. 11,00,000 [$13,200]
Income from Export / Pulp @ Rs. 250/kg = Rs. 27,50,000 [$33,000]
After removing yearly expense of Rs. 60,000, **Net Profit = Rs. 10 Lakh to Rs. 26 Lakh per year [$12,000 to $31,200]**
And this plant will give fruit continuously for the next 15 years, while the expense after the 3rd year will remain only Rs. 60,000. That means one-time investment and income in crores for 15 years.
#### 10. How to Export and Get Government Help
For export, you need APEDA Registration, IEC Code, FSSAI License, and GLOBAL-GAP Certification. All these are made in 15-20 days.
The government gives 40-50% subsidy on high-density plantation and 55% subsidy on drip under the National Horticulture Mission. APEDA also gives money for Pack House and Cold Storage. You can directly contact buyers in Dubai through Indiamart, Alibaba.com and the APEDA website.
For export, you need to do proper documentation, cold chain transport, and phytosanitary certificate. APEDA helps new exporters in every step.
**Conclusion**
Don't think of Custard Apple as a poor man's fruit anymore. With high-density, hand pollination, and pulp processing, it has become a more profitable crop than even Dragon Fruit. It needs less water, grows even in barren stony land, and needs less care. Just start with 1 acre, learn the Taiwan technique, and instead of selling the fruit directly in the mandi, make pulp and sell it. This is the global formula to become a millionaire.
