Part .1

**Wood Apple (Kaitha) Farming – Part 2**
**Advanced Guide: Higher Yields, Processing, Value Addition & Real Profits** 🌳💰
Hello friends!
Yesterday we covered the basics of Kaitha (Wood Apple) cultivation — why grow it, soil, climate, planting method, irrigation, and rough profit numbers.
Today is **Part 2**. This one is written especially for mobile reading — short paragraphs, clear headings, and practical steps you can actually use.
If you already planted Kaitha trees or are planning to, this part will help you make **much more money** from the same orchard.
Let’s go deep.
## Quick Recap + What’s New Today
In Part 1 we saw that one acre can give ₹3–8 lakh from raw fruit after the trees mature.
But most farmers stop there. That’s the biggest mistake.
The real money is in:
- Better management for higher yield
- Processing (sharbat, squash, jam, chutney)
- Direct marketing
- Government support
This Part 2 covers all of that in simple language.
Read it slowly on your phone. Save it. Share it with other farmers.
## Best Types of Kaitha Plants You Should Choose
There are no many official named varieties like in mango. Most Kaitha is still local types.
But you can choose better plants:
**Sweet type**
— Less sour, better for eating raw and making squash. Higher market price.
**Sour type**
— More common, very good for sharbat, chutney and pickle. High pectin, good for jam.
**Big fruit type**
— 400–600 gram fruits. Easier to sell in mandi.
**Small fruit type**
— More fruits per tree, good for processing.
**My strong advice:**
Always buy **grafted plants** from a good nursery. Ask for plants taken from a high-yielding, sweet mother tree.
Seedling plants take 7–8 years. Grafted ones start giving fruit in 3–4 years and quality is better.
If possible, visit the mother tree yourself before buying 50–60 plants.
## Real Cost of Starting 1 Acre Kaitha Orchard (Current Prices)
Many people ask “bhai kitna kharcha aayega?”
Here is a realistic breakdown for 1 acre (50 trees at 8×8 or 9×9 meter spacing):
- Grafted plants (50 nos): ₹80–150 each = ₹4,000 – ₹7,500
- Pit digging + filling (manure, neem cake, SSP): ₹12,000 – ₹18,000
- Drip irrigation system (optional but highly recommended): ₹25,000 – ₹40,000
- First year weeding, basin making, staking: ₹8,000 – ₹12,000
- Organic manure + fertilizers first year: ₹6,000 – ₹10,000
- Miscellaneous (transport, labour, fencing if needed): ₹5,000 – ₹10,000
**Total initial investment: ₹60,000 to ₹95,000 per acre**
From second year onwards yearly cost is only ₹15,000–25,000 (manure, labour, some spray).
This is very low compared to mango or banana.
If you already have drip or can do flood irrigation, cost comes down further.
## Intercropping: Don’t Sit Idle for 3–4 Years
Trees take time. In the first 3–4 years you can earn from the same land.
Good intercrops for Kaitha orchard:
- Turmeric or ginger (shade loving, high value)
- Pulses — moong, urad, cowpea (adds nitrogen)
- Vegetables — chilli, brinjal, tomato, okra in first 2 years
- Medicinal plants — aloe vera, ashwagandha, lemongrass
- Groundnut or sesame in rainfed areas
Keep 1.5–2 meter clear space around each Kaitha plant.
Many farmers in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra earn ₹40,000–80,000 per acre from intercrops in the initial years. This covers your maintenance cost easily.
After 4th year, reduce intercrops as tree canopy grows.
## Month-by-Month Work Calendar for Kaitha Orchard
This is very useful. Save this.
**January**
Light pruning of dry branches. Apply farmyard manure + neem cake. Check for stem borer.
**February**
Second dose of fertilizer. Start irrigation if no rain. Flowering may start in some areas.
**March**
Full flowering time in many regions. Give light irrigation. Spray micronutrients (especially boron and zinc) for better fruit set.
**April–May**
Hot months. Mulch the basin with dry leaves or grass. Irrigate every 12–15 days. Young fruits start growing.
**June**
Pre-monsoon. Prepare for rains. Clean basins. Apply remaining organic manure.
**July–August**
Monsoon. No irrigation needed. Watch for fungal problems. Do light weeding. Best time for new planting.
**September**
Post-monsoon fertilizer. Check fruit growth. Remove water shoots.
**October**
Fruits start maturing in some areas. Reduce irrigation. Prepare for harvest.
**November–December**
Main harvesting season in North and Central India. Grade the fruits. Sell or process.
Follow this calendar and your trees will stay healthy and give more fruit.
## How to Harvest Kaitha Properly
Wrong harvesting reduces price and shelf life.
**Signs of maturity:**
- Fruit colour changes from green to greyish or yellowish
- Hard shell becomes even harder
- Fruit gives a dull sound when tapped
- Some fruits start dropping naturally
**How to harvest:**
- Use a long bamboo pole with a small net or hook. Don’t shake the tree hard.
- Never hit the fruit with stick — it cracks the shell and pulp spoils faster.
- Collect fallen fruits daily, they are usually ripe.
- Harvest in the morning.
One person can harvest 80–120 kg per day easily.
A mature tree (8+ years) can give 250–450 kg in a good year.
## Post-Harvest: Kaitha Has a Super Power
This is the best part of this fruit.
Because of the very hard woody shell, **Kaitha can be stored for 3–6 months** at room temperature if kept dry and airy.
No cold storage needed in the beginning.
**Simple steps after harvest:**
- Wipe the fruits clean
- Grade into big, medium, small
- Remove cracked or damaged ones immediately (use them for processing same day)
- Store in bamboo baskets or wooden crates in a dry, ventilated room
- Do not pile more than 4–5 layers
This long shelf life is a big advantage over mango, papaya or banana. You can wait for better price.
## Value Addition — This Is Where Real Money Is
Raw Kaitha sells for ₹30–80 per kg.
Processed products sell for much more.
### 1. Kaitha Sharbat / Squash (Most Popular)
Very simple and high demand in summer.
**Basic home/commercial method:**
- Break the shell, scoop the pulp
- Mix pulp + water + sugar + black salt + roasted cumin + mint
- Strain
- For squash: add more sugar and a preservative (sodium benzoate) if making for sale
- Bottle it
1 kg pulp can make 3–4 litres of ready sharbat.
Selling price: ₹80–150 per litre.
Many small brands are now selling “Wood Apple Cooler” or “Kaitha Sharbat” on Instagram and Amazon.
### 2. Kaitha Jam and Jelly
Pulp has natural pectin, so jam sets easily.
Mix pulp + sugar + lemon juice, cook till thick. Fill in glass jars.
Looks premium. Sells well in organic stores and exhibitions.
### 3. Chutney and Pickle
Spicy Kaitha chutney is loved in many homes.
Good for local market and tiffin shops.
### 4. Other Ideas
- Kaitha powder (dry the pulp and grind) — used in health drinks
- Candy or barfi type sweets
- Mixed fruit squash (Kaitha + amla or mango)
If you process even 30–40% of your produce, your income can easily become **double or triple**.
## How to Start a Small Processing Unit
You don’t need a big factory.
**Village or home level setup:**
- Pulp extractor or just hammers + stainless steel vessels (₹15,000–30,000)
- Mixer/grinder and gas stove
- Bottling machine (semi-automatic) or manual filling
- Bottles, caps, labels
- Small working space (even 200–300 sq ft)
Total investment for small unit: ₹80,000 to ₹2 lakh.
**Licenses needed:**
- FSSAI registration (very important, costs little)
- GST if turnover is more
- Local municipal/trade license
Many women SHGs and FPOs are already doing this with Kaitha and earning good money.
Government gives subsidy on food processing machinery under PMFME scheme (up to 35% for general, more for women/SC/ST).
## Government Schemes You Must Apply For
Don’t leave free money.
- **MIDH (Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture)** — subsidy on planting material, drip, mulching, packing house
- **National Horticulture Board (NHB)** — for bigger projects and cold storage (even small ones)
- **PMKSY** — drip and sprinkler subsidy (50–90% depending on state and category)
- **PMFME** — One District One Product and micro food processing subsidy
- State horticulture missions — many states give extra subsidy on fruit plants
- Formation of FPO — you get better price and government support
Go to your district horticulture office or Krishi Vigyan Kendra. They will help with paperwork.
A little running around can save you ₹30,000–70,000 per acre.
## Marketing That Actually Works in 2025
Local mandi is okay, but limited.
Better ways:
**1. Direct to Ayurvedic companies and juice brands**
They need consistent supply of pulp or whole fruit. Make a simple visiting card and WhatsApp catalogue.
**2. Online selling**
Make Instagram and Facebook page. Post reels of “how to make Kaitha sharbat at home”. People love it. Sell bottles through WhatsApp and Instagram.
**3. Tie-up with hotels, cafes and juice bars**
Especially in tourist places and big cities. Offer sample.
**4. Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO)**
10–15 farmers together can brand “Organic Wood Apple Products” and sell in bulk.
**5. Export**
Middle East and some European countries have demand for exotic Indian fruits and concentrates. You need APEDA registration and proper packaging. Start small after you have volume.
The farmers who treat Kaitha as a **brand**, not just a fruit, are making the real profit.
## 7 Common Mistakes That Kill Your Profit
1. Planting seedling plants instead of grafted ones (wastes 4 extra years)
2. No intercropping in first years (you sit without income)
3. Ignoring micronutrients — especially boron (causes fruit drop)
4. Harvesting too early or damaging the shell
5. Selling only raw fruit and not processing even 20%
6. Not taking any government subsidy
7. No record keeping — you don’t know your real profit
Avoid these and you will be ahead of 90% farmers.
## Should You Go Organic?
Yes, if possible.
Kaitha already needs very less chemicals. If you do it fully organic (only FYM, neem, jeevamrit, etc.), you can sell at 30–50% higher price.
Organic certification takes 3 years (PGS or third party). Many buyers now ask for it.
Even without certificate, you can say “naturally grown, no pesticide” and get better rate in cities.
## My Final Advice and Action Plan
Kaitha is not a get-rich-quick crop. It is a **smart, long-term, low-risk crop** for dry and waste lands.
If you have 1–2 acres of land that is not giving good income from regular crops, Kaitha + processing is one of the best options in 2025.
**This week you should:**
- Visit 2–3 nurseries and see grafted Kaitha plants
- Talk to your horticulture officer about subsidy
- Decide whether you will do only fruit or also processing
- Calculate your own 1-acre cost using the numbers I gave
The tree you plant this year will give fruit to your children also. That’s the beauty of Kaitha.
If you found this Part 2 useful, share it with at least 3 farmer friends. One of them might change their land’s future.
Have you already planted Kaitha? Or are you planning this year?
What is your biggest doubt — planting, processing or selling?
Comment below. I read every comment.
Keep farming smart.
See you in the next post. 🌿
